Coaching programme refunds and cancellation rights in the UK

If you have paid for a coaching programme that is not delivering, you usually have more options than the coach suggests. This is general information rather than legal advice, but it will tell you which doors exist.

Consumer rights depend on how you bought it

If you bought as a consumer rather than through a business, distance-selling rules generally give a 14-day cancellation period for services, unless you expressly agreed the service could start immediately and acknowledged losing that right. Many programmes include exactly that acknowledgement, so check what you ticked.

If you bought through a limited company, consumer protections largely do not apply and you are back to the contract terms. This is one reason sellers encourage a company purchase.

Services must be carried out with reasonable care and skill

Where consumer law applies, a service must be performed with reasonable care and skill and match what was described. A programme that promised live mentoring and delivered recorded slides is a description problem, not a matter of taste.

Put the mismatch in writing, factually, with dates and what was promised versus supplied, and ask for a specific remedy: re-performance or a partial refund.

Card chargebacks and Section 75

Credit card purchases between £100 and £30,000 may be covered by Section 75, making the card provider jointly liable with the seller for misrepresentation or breach of contract. Debit card payments may be reversible via chargeback, which is time-limited, so act quickly.

Keep the sales page, the call recording if you have one, the contract and the delivery evidence. Chargeback cases are won on documents.

If they threaten legal action

Aggressive letters, threats of court and contact to your home address are frightening by design. A threat is not a judgment. Respond in writing, stay factual, keep every message, and do not agree to anything on a phone call you have not seen in writing.

If you are a consumer facing a disputed debt, free help exists through Citizens Advice, and unfair or misleading trading practices can be reported to Trading Standards. Harassment by a collection agent has its own rules.

Write it down while it is fresh

Whatever route you take, record the sequence of events with dates: what was promised, what was delivered, what you asked for and what they said. It strengthens a refund claim, and it is also what helps the next person searching for the same coach's name.
